Why does the gum bleed?

There are quite a number of reasons why the gums bleed from time to time. 

  1. Lack of flossing

  2. Inadequate brushing

  3. Using an improper brushing technique

  4. Need for a professional dental cleaning by the dentist or Dental Hygienist

  5. Genetics

  6. Systemic Diseases for example leukemia or hemophilia

  7. Gum disease

  8. Poor nutrition reulting in vitamin C or K defficiency

  9. Poor dental hygiene causing build up of plaque along gumline

  10. Illfitting dentures

  11. Hormonal changes during pregnancy

Gingivitis

Plaque induced Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum caused mainly by poor oral hygiene. Resulting in bacterial plaque build up on the teeth and below the gumline. Gingivitis causes swelling, redness, bleeding and irritation of the gum.

 

People at risk for gingivitis include people going through, puberty, menopause, menstrual cycles, , pregnancy, diabetes, HIV, certain drugs that cause gingival overgrowth and poor diet.

 

If gingivitis is left untreated it may result into a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis.
